I KEEP ONE of my better recent photos under wraps. If you're a Facebook friend, you might have seen it briefly before I took it down. This is an alternate take from the same shoot. It's the Old Post Office Building on Pennsylvania Avenue, along the route newly elected Presidents walk on their way from the Capitol to the White House on Inauguration Day. Under a long-term lease with the government, Donald Trump is converting it into a deluxe hotel. Huge signs on the site read:

Where I Shoot
I'VE TAKEN NEARLY all of the photos in my Close Ups project in Washington's K Street corridor, in an area bounded to the south by the White House, to the west by 17th Street, to the north by P Street, and to the east by 13th Street. K Street is the epicenter of Washington's lobbying industry and McPherson Square was the site of the Occupy K Street encampment in 2011-2012. The neighborhood also has a wild side.14th Street between K Street and Thomas Circle is Washington's old

My Close Ups Project
I NEVER PLANNED to do a series of street headshots. It began by chance in March with this photo. I needed to lose weight, so I decided to take walks at lunchtime during the workweek and brought my Fuji X100T along. I ran into this guy not five minutes into the first walk and asked if I could take his picture. "No one's ever asked to take my picture before," he said. "Sure, why not?" So I quickly took some shots, none great, shook his hand and thanked him, and off he went. Wit
